This was probably the largest fortress in England in the 5th century. Archaeological evidence also suggests it could be the fortress of King Arthur.

It was built around 1138 by Bishop Roger of Salisbury, King Henry 1's Chancellor. It is an excellent example of the power of the bishops at the time.
