Welcome To Wessex

All Wessex's palaces, historic houses, country estates and cottages are readily accessible from London, Heathrow airport, Gatwick airport and the Channel Tunnel. Within the Wessex area itself, Bristol, Bournemouth and Southampton airports are enjoying more and more scheduled international services. They are also all within easy driving distance of one another. This is ideal for visitors who like to base themselves in one place for two, three or more nights and explore the surrounding area instead of moving every day

The Seasons

Being in the South West of England, Wessex has a relatively mild climate. Spring and autumn are excellent times to visit its historic houses. The obvious reason is that the visitor avoids the peak season volume but there is more to it than that. Spring and autumn have their own special qualities.

In spring, the houses are fresh after their annual winter maintenance. There is new life in the house and outside, the gardens are full of the colour of spring bulbs, blossom and rhododendrons. In autumn, the pace has slowed, there is time for the visitor to enjoy the exhibits and out in the beautifully landscaped parks there are the rich autumn colours
